Disposable vapes have become hugely popular over the last 2 years, with around 168 million being bought annually [1]. The reasons for this is most likely due to the ease of use of disposables. There is also the fact that switching to vaping is much cheaper than smoking, especially for social smokers. However, such a rise in the number of disposables brings with it a growing problem: waste. Inside every disposable vape is a lithium ion battery, which can be a problem. Incorrect disposal of these devices can cause damage to water sources and animal habitats [2]. But, there is a more eco friendly (and cheaper) alternative in the form of disposable pod vapes. With these devices you simply dispose of the pre-filled pod, whilst keeping and charging the battery to use in future.
Disposable pod systems are nothing new, with devices like the JUUL, Byte and Vuse having been around for a while. The problem with these pod systems is that they don’t compare to the intensity of flavour that disposable vapes have. Luckily, there are four main devices on the market that we’re going to take a look at that have as much flavour as the leading disposables.
4. Elf Bar ELFA

The Elf Bar ELFA device features a 500mAh battery and USB-C quick charge. And, the pods for this kit have 2ml of liquid at 2% (20mg) strength, which is the same as a standard Elf Bar. Each pod comes fitted with a mesh coil, meaning that the flavour really comes through.
I tried the blueberry raspberry sour and kiwi passionfruit guava pods, and found they are exactly as good as the original Elf Bar 600. The only downside to the ELFA that I found is the smaller range of flavours. The ELFA pods have 35 flavours to choose from, but blueberry cotton candy and cranberry grape are unique to the ELFA. This smaller range of flavours earned the ELFA the third spot on my list. This device also looks exactly like an Elf Bar 600, which is great if you’re used to vaping them.
3. Elf Bar Mate 500

The Elf Bar Mate 500 has a 500mAh battery, which makes sense. Much like the newer ELFA, the mate has USB-C fast charge which is very handy. Also like the ELFA the P1 pods contain 2ml of 2% liquid. Instead of the mesh coils the P1 pods have a dual coil, which in my opinion gives just as much flavour as a mesh coil.
When trying this device I chose to go for the blue razz lemonade and mango pods. Both were great and lasted me as long as an Elf Bar 600 would last me. Once the pod was out of liquid, I replaced it and gave it a charge over night. The main advantage of the Mate was the number of flavours available, 28 in total. Which is much more than the ELFA. I also like the look of this kit, as it doesn’t look like the traditional Elf Bar 600.
2. SKE Crystal Plus

With a 400mAh battery, the Crystal Plus lasts a similar time to the Elf Bar kits on the list. This will easily last you the life of a pod. It also recharges with a USB-C input, so you’ll be back to vaping in no time. The Crystal Plus pods are available in 2% and are very smooth, thanks to the bar salt liquid. Each one will provide around 600 puffs before needing to be changed.
There are 30 great flavours to pick from and they’re exactly the same as their Crystal Bar counterparts. But, you get two pods for about the price of one disposable. My favourite is definitely the Lemon & Lime, but the Rainbow comes a close second.
It was tough choosing between the Elf Bar Mate and the ELFA. Apart from looks and coil type (which I didn’t notice a difference) they are pretty much the same kit. I prefered the flavours in the Crystal Plus, but the top pick though stood apart from the others by a mile.
1. VLTZ Flex Pro

The VLTZ Flex Pro is a revolution in the disposable pod vape scene. Featuring a 1000mAh battery, it doubles the charge held by the other entries on this list. Just like the ELFA and Mate, the flex also has USB-C charging. The Flex Pro prefilled pods also have 2ml of liquid and 1.6% nicotine strength.
Enjoy a range of best selling VLTZ flavours including blue razz lemonade, grape, and tropical mango.
Final Verdict
All four devices were good, and a great alternative to disposables like the Elf Bar or VLTZ Bar. The flex stood out from the crowd due to its large battery capacity and design of the device. The only downside of the flex was the number of flavours available, but I’ve been told there are more on the way! The Mate 500, ELFA and Crystal Plus also had their positives, I liked how small these devices were and were great for slipping into my pocket. All in all, four cheaper and more environmentally friendly options for those who enjoy disposable vapes.
