Does Innokin's latest AIO device live up to its spiritual predecessors?
Innokin JEM Pen Overview
Innokin are renowned for bringing out e-cigs which cater brilliantly to those who love mouth to lung vaping, in addition to spot on e-liquid flavour.
The JEM Pen is one of the latest additions to their stable, and Innokin have gone all out to let vapers know that this e-cig is all about flavour.
So lets get down to business and talk about the specs:
Specifications
- Tank capacity – 2ml
- Coil resistance – 1.6ohm / 2.0ohm ceramic
- Battery capacity – 1000mAh
- Dimensions – 129.5mm x 16mm
Kit Contents
- 1 x Innokin JEM Pen kit
- 2 x JEM coils
- 1 x USB charging cable
- 1 x User manual
On the surface, we can see that the specs are in-line with what you would expect from a ‘pen style’ e-cig, but how does the JEM Pen perform?
Appearance
There is no doubt that the JEM Pen looks and feels great. The glossy finish, teardrop e-liquid viewing window and the subtle gold band which separates the tank from the battery, helps to add a touch of class.
The edges are all nicely rounded off, with no sharpness to the body at all. The mouthpiece twists off easily when needing a refill, although it would perhaps have been more durable if it were made from steel instead of plastic.
The activation button has 5 neatly aligned LED lights which determine the amount of battery that is left. The USB charging port is conveniently located and there is no doubt that this e-cig manages to pull off the ‘less is more’ approach very well.
All in all, whilst generally quite basic in appearance, the JEM Pen pulls off a classic look with some nice touches. The glossy finish on the black unit we had for review is a fingerprint magnet however, which might annoy some.
Performance
The Innokin JEM Pen has been designed to make the most from your e-liquid flavours, so we thought we’d put this to the test.
For this review, we paired it with MyVapors Blackcurrant e-liquid in a 10mg strength, as the 60/40 PG:VG ratio is ideal for this type of e-cig.
There are two coils included with the JEM Pen, a 1.6ohm and a new 2.0ohm ceramic option which has been added to the existing JEM range. Naturally we decided to take the new coil out for a spin!
The battery is easily turned on by clicking the button 5 times to activate, and refilling is as simple as twisting the top cap.
Innokin claims the JEM Pen is designed for flavour, and we have to agree with this; at least with the 2.0ohm ceramic coil. The blackcurrant was intense and sweet, without being overpowering. We were suitably impressed with this new addition!
The vapour production was good, roughly what you would expect from a MTL e-cig like this, and the airflow was well suited to the coils supplied.
The 1.6ohm coil is not as good as the ceramic. The flavour is a little more muted than we would have preferred. The vapour produced was of course better thanks to the lower resistance, and the flavour was good, it just wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.
The battery life was around 6-8 hours with moderate usage, and recharging took approximately 2-3 hours when using a standard 1A wall adaptor.
Ease Of Use
Let’s get one thing straight, the JEM Pen is very easy to use. The simple design and relatively few moving parts ensure that any vaper can pick up and vape this e-cig.
The top fill system is intuitive, and simply twists off when you are ready to refill. The plastic design of this cap may however reduce durability in the long term. We would have preferred to see a steel piece used here.
Replacing the coil is also straightforward. All you need to do is flip the JEM Pen upside down, unscrew the tank to expose the coil, then simply remove the old one and insert your replacement.
The battery is just as easy to use; just click the button 5 times to turn on/off, and when recharging is required, plug the USB cable in to begin charging.
Price
The price is incredibly competitive on this product. You can get your hands on one for just £15.29 (RRP £17.99) via our website! We believe that we have the cheapest price online in the UK for the JEM Pen.
Target Audience
The thing about the JEM Pen is that it caters wonderfully well to both new and existing vapers. It is incredibly easy to use and offers a great MTL vaping experience.
Whilst obviously not suited to people who like chasing clouds, the JEM Pen packs in all of Innokin’s MTL know-how into a sleek package. We think this is appealing to all kinds of vapers.
Simply put, if you enjoy e-cigs that have a tighter draw, and prefer to stay away from the cloud chasing devices, this is absolutely worth considering.
Verdict
The JEM Pen was a joy to use from start to finish. We were particularly impressed with the performance of the 2.0ohm ceramic coils, which provided brilliant flavour from our e-liquid.
We have broken down the scores below, which includes our final verdict:
- Appearance = 8
- Performance = 9
- Ease Of Use = 9
- Price = 10
- Target Audience = 7
Final Score = 8.6
The Innokin JEM Pen left a great impression on us. Whilst there are a couple of areas which could perhaps be better, such as the fingerprint magnet finish, plastic top refilling cap and the 1.6ohm coil being less impressive than the 2.0ohm ceramic, we feel the positives far outweigh the negatives here.
Whether it’s the sleek design, ease of use, brilliant ceramic coils or the equally brilliant price, the JEM Pen is an ideal all in one MTL e-cigarette. Innokin know their stuff, and we have to say that we never doubted them for a second.
