Juul's Effort to Make This Reality

The ambition of the UK government is for the country to be smoke free by 2030. What this means is the government aim for less than 5% of the country smoking by the end of 2030[1]. In order to make the smokefree 2030 goal a reality Dr Javed Khan OBE, charity CEO, produced a report that outlines several changes that the government need to implement.

The Khan Report
Khan suggested 15 total recommendations that would help the UK achieve the smokefree 2030 target. Below are some of the relevant recommendations that would help support vaping.
Recommendation 1
Recommendation 1 suggested investing £125 million per year to stop people smoking. £70 million of this would be devoted to stop smoking services. This would help stop smoking services highlight the benefits of vaping. Also, Juul showed these benefits in a study in 2019. It was shown that switching solely to a Juul device lowers smokers’ exposure to signals of smoking by 99.6%[2].
Recommendation 3
This recommendation suggests an immediate rise in tobacco duty. This would see a 30% rise in the duty charged on tobacco products. Also, there would be a ban on duty-free tobacco entering the country. This tax would not be applicable to e-liquids, meaning that vaping would be much cheaper than smoking. Currently, based on a 10 a day smoker, you’d save around £100 per month switching to a Juul 2 device. Therefore, if this duty increase came into effect the savings would be even greater.
Recommendation 6
This recommendation is to reduce the appeal of smoking by further limiting the packaging of cigarettes. Juul already focus on this, simplifying its packaging and reducing displayed content. Also, Juul restrict media use and have no social media presence in the UK. Juul restricts the marketing for its products, and focus only on adult smokers. In conjunction with all Juul stockists, strict guidelines are given to make sure that Juul products aren’t promoted to the wrong audience.
Recommendation 7
The seventh recommendation suggests increasing the amount of smoke free public areas. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) proposed banning smoking in outdoor public areas such as outside pubs and restaurants[3]. This ban would not include vaping, meaning that smokers would have more of an incentive to quit. Juul devices, especially the Juul 2, are ideal devices for vaping in public places as they are small and pocketable.

How Juul Are Helping to Achieve Smoke Free 2030
Juul are committed in helping the billion adult smokers transition from cigarettes onto a cleaner way of living. Its goal is to prevent underage use of its products and help support adult smokers, through work with regulators, public health organisations and other stakeholders[4]. In order to combat the underage appeal of its products, Juul diligently combat counterfeit versions of their products[4]. These illegal fake Juul pods and kits are available in colours and flavours that underage vapers may find appealing.
