New vapers can have a hard time adjusting to an e-cig. Especially when they begin with a kit that uses coils and settings. With so much to learn about switching to a safer alternative to cigarettes. Here arethe most common vaping mistakes & how to avoid them.
Vaping harder to get a bigger cloud.
When you inhale harder on a cigarette it burns faster which means you get more smoke. E-cigs don’t work like that, and the only thing that will result from a harder draw is a burnt coil. If you’d like more vapour there are a few things you could try.
- Fully open the airflow.
- Use a lower resistance coil.
- Raise the power setting of your kit, if you can.
Waiting too long to buy more liquid.

There’s nothing worse than reaching for a new bottle of e-liquid and then you realise that you just finished your last one. Making sure you’re well stocked on vaping supplies is key, and stops any scrambling around trying to find your favourite flavours at the last minute.
Luckily, we offer a subscription service that is automatically billed in a weekly frequency of your choice. It arrives through your letterbox with 12 bottles, and you can change which flavours will be arriving up to 24 hours before the next billing date is due.
Not drinking enough.
PG and VG, the diluents that make up e-liquid absorb moisture when exhaled. This might sound scary, but the only thing this might cause is a bit of dry mouth. Make sure you have a drink to hand when you’re vaping and you should be fine.
Not waiting for the coil to soak.
Out of the most common vaping mistakes, this is a biggie. When you first fill up a pod or install a coil for the first time, you need time to let the liquid soak into the wicking material inside. If you don’t then you’re going to be vaping burnt cotton, and trust me on this one, it’s not pleasant.
This can be avoided by simply letting your pod or coil absorb the liquid for around 5-10 minutes. If you’re installing a new coil then you can also add a few drops to the centre of it before you insert it into the tank.
It’s also important to let your it soak for a few minutes if you’ve just topped up your tank after letting it completely empty before re-filling.
Vaping the wrong strength.
If the strength of your e-liquid is too low, then you might be be left with nicotine cravings. Likewise, if it’s too high then you may experience nicotine rush, throat irritation or a cough.
Here’s the correct strengths when compared to cigarettes:
| Cigarettes Per Day | E-liquid Strength |
|---|---|
| <1 | 3mg (0.3%) |
| 1-5 | 5-9mg (0.5%-0.9%) |
| 5-15 | 10-13mg (1%-1.3%) |
| 15-20 | 14-17mg (1.4%-1.7%) |
| 20+ | 18-20mg (1.8%-2%) |
If you’re using a freebase nicotine and it still feels too strong, consider switching to a nic salt.
Not changing a burnt coil.
If your coil or pod starts to taste burnt or the flavour isn’t what it should be, then it probably needs changing. You should be putting a new one in roughly every 1-2 weeks.
If your coils are burning out a little quicker than they should, check that the power settings aren’t too high. Also, sugary liquids and bar salts can impact the life span.
Vaping the wrong device.
Not everyone does their research when buying their first e-cig. This can lead people to buying the completely wrong kit for their vaping style. If you’re after a cigarette draw, you don’t want a low resistance, sub-ohm kit. Likewise, if you’re looking for huge clouds, then an MTL device isn’t for you.
If you’re unsure which kit is right for you then feel free to contact our friendly customer service team.
Trying to vape with a closed airflow.
When I worked in customer service, you’d be surprised at how many customers had this issue. Some kits and tanks have adjustable airflow, meaning that vapers can change it to how they like it. But, if you’re not aware of this then you won’t know if it accidentally gets closed in your pocket.
Using the wrong charger.

E-cigs should be charged using a 1A outlet, this ensures that your battery isn’t going to get damaged by too much power. Be careful when using phone chargers or games consoles, as these outlets can be as high as 5A. This will cause your e-cig to hold it’s power for less time, eventually not holding any charge.
You can pick up a 1A plug for £5.99.
Keeping your e-cig in the wrong place.
It’s actually possible to keep your device in the wrong place. If you’re using a sliding top fill tank then it’s best to keep your e-cig as upright as possible. If it’s left on its side, then the tank could leak slightly.
Also try to avoid extreme temperatures. Heat and cold can impact battery life so try to keep it off your window sill.
