Nicotine pouches are a different NRT, but are they safe?

In this article...
It is common knowledge that vaping is considered to be 95% safer than smoking cigarettes, but what about other nicotine alternatives?
Although not created specifically to aid quitting smoking, nicotine pouches have gained popularity as a healthier alternative to cigarettes. But, are nicotine pouches safe? Let’s take a look.
What are Nicotine Pouches?
Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco leaves, unlike traditional products such as cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco. This is significant because combustion releases harmful chemicals such as tar and carcinogenic compounds. However, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) notes that nicotine pouches are not regulated by tobacco or e-cigarette regulations but rather general consumer product safety regulations [1].
The National Health Service (NHS) acknowledges that nicotine pouches may aid in nicotine withdrawal symptoms but does not recommend them as a stop-smoking aid due to a lack of research on their effectiveness and safety [2].
Overall, evidence suggests that nicotine pouches are less harmful than traditional cigarettes and can help with nicotine withdrawal without the harmful chemicals found in tobacco.
Possible side effects of nicotine pouches
It's important to be aware that even though nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco, they can still have side effects. This is especially true if you do not use them correctly or use a nicotine strength that is too high. Consuming more nicotine than your body is accustomed to can increase the likelihood of negative side effects. To prevent any potential adverse effects, it’s recommended to start with a lower nicotine strength and gradually increase as needed to determine what works best for you.
Possible side effects can include:
- Nausia
- Mouth/gum irritation
- Hiccups
Burning sensations
When you first use nicotine pouches, you may be concerned about a burning or tingling sensation on your gum. However, this is a normal feeling and is no direct cause for concern. This sensation is created when nicotine reacts with saliva and is absorbed. If you do find the sensation too strong, it may be worth trying a lower nicotine strength or flavour.
Nicotine Pouch Examples
If you plan to use nicotine pouches, we recommend starting with a lower nicotine strength and monitoring their effects.
