Recently, there has been a lot of negative press about vaping. The IBVTA has launched a new nationwide campaign. The purpose of this is to combat misconceptions and promote the industry’s role in helping the UK go smoke-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are the IBVTA?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The IBVTA<\/a> was created to represent the independent vaping industry. It speaks with government bodies, regulators and enforcement agencies. Additionally, several of these groups are prohibited from allowing the tobacco industry to participate in any policy influence or engagement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Vaping instead of smoking helps save smokers’ lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each year, smoking is responsible for approximately 76,000 deaths in the UK and over 7 million deaths worldwide. Also, some smokers are left to suffer from lifelong smoking-related illnesses. The toxins in cigarette smoke have a catastrophic impact on the body, causing cancer, strokes, COPD, as well as heart and lung diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount of chemicals found in vapour is significantly lower than in smoke, and even those that are present in both are very small amounts. These aren’t high enough to affect health, which makes vaping 95% safer than smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRPR regulations restrict certain aspects of e-cigs, to ensure user safety. This includes things like 10ml bottle sizes, 2ml tank sizes and a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg. Some devices sold in less respectable retailers exceed these, with tanks reaching 10ml and strengths up to 50mg. Also, counterfeit vapes may not meet standards for electronic devices and may be a fire risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchasing your devices from reputable retailers helps to prevent this, as they’ll only be stocking TRPR approved products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Youth vaping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Studies indicate that even children as young as 11 years old are able to access e-cigarettes, particularly disposable ones that offer intense flavours and high amounts of nicotine. Although these devices may be useful for adult smokers who are trying to quit, they can be dangerous for minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main cause of youth vaping is irresponsible retailers who fail to verify age and the importation of illegal vapes, which requires tighter customs policing. Addressing these two factors could significantly reduce youth vaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect the environment, recycle your vape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The IBVTA has informed the government of the challenges hindering the effective recycling of batteries and single-use vapes. There is a pressing need to address the inadequate recycling of disposables. While authorised importers disregard waste regulations, illegal importers are unlikely to comply with product compliance schemes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the IBVTA recommends tightening border controls to limit the importation of illegal vaping products into the country. Additionally, retailers should bear the costs of recycling confiscated vapes to ensure accountability and proper disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the government truly supports vaping, it must address this issue. We need to provide a platform for promoting vaping as a viable and effective method for smoking cessation, supported by scientific evidence. The IBVTA campaign will help to achieve this and shed light on the facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
