But, there is still plenty of misconceptions about its link to smoking. And there are still smokers and non-smokers that believe that vapour is just as bad as smoke, or worse. Let&#8217;s dispel these myths and talk about the real difference between smoke &amp; vapour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we discuss the main differences, let&#8217;s define both smoke and vapour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is smoke?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dictionary defines smoke as &#8220;a visible suspension of carbon or other particles in air, typically one&nbsp;emitted&nbsp;from a burning substance&#8221;. But, for the sake of this article we&#8217;re talking about cigarette smoke. When someone lights a combustible tobacco product, the smoke that forms contains thousands of harmful chemicals. Around 250 of these have been classified as &#8216;highly toxic&#8217;. Some of the worst culprits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ammonia &#8211;<\/strong> A corrosive chemical that damages cells.<\/li><li><strong>Benzene &#8211; <\/strong>A chemical that causes cells to not work properly.<\/li><li><strong>Carbon monoxide&nbsp;&#8211;<\/strong> Which lowers the oxygen in the blood.<\/li><li><strong>Formaldehyde &#8211;<\/strong> An enzyme that can damage DNA.<\/li><li><strong>Hydrogen cyanide &#8211;<\/strong> A poison that stops cells from absorbing oxygen.<\/li><li><strong>Lead &#8211;<\/strong> A toxic metal that replaces the metals that your body needs.<\/li><li><strong>Nitrosamines &#8211;<\/strong> Is a carcinogen (a substance believed or proven to cause cancer).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dangers of Smoking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoking causes around 76,000 deaths every year in the UK and over 7 million deaths worldwide. With many more left suffering with smoking related illness. The reason that smoke is so dangerous is the devastating effect the toxins have on the body. They&#8217;ve been linked to cancer, strokes, COPD, heart disease and lung diseases. I personally developed Asthma from smoking, an illness that I had never had to deal with until previously. Thankfully, vaping was around to help me transition onto a much safer alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is vapour?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition of vapour is &#8220;a substance&nbsp;diffused&nbsp;or suspended in the air, especially one normally liquid or solid&#8221;. What we&#8217;re specifically referring to is the product of heating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theelectroniccigarette.co.uk\/e-liquid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e-liquid<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vape juice contains four main components: Vegetable Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, flavourings and nicotine. Let&#8217;s take a look at what each of these do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vegetable Glycerin &#8211;<\/strong> VG is responsible for creating the vapour that you see. Liquids that are higher in VG produce more cloud and are thicker. It&#8217;s sometimes replaced with Aqueous Glycerine, which is VG that has been thinned using de-ionised water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Propylene Glycol &#8211;<\/strong> PG carries the throat hit and flavour. Liquids that are heavier in PG are thinner and are usually preferred by new vapers, as it more closely replicates a cigarette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flavourings &#8211;<\/strong> Exactly as the name suggests, it gives the vape juice flavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicotine &#8211;<\/strong> Nicotine is a stimulant that works in a very similar way to caffeine. Whilst it isn&#8217;t that dangerous it does increase heart rate and is highly addictive. It&#8217;s found in 2 main forms, freebase and nic salt. Freebase nicotine provides a throat hit based on the strength, whereas nic salt has little to no throat hit and is popular amongst high nicotine users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some sweeter e-liquids can also contain food-safe colour and sweeteners, but none of these are dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dangers of Vaping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vape juice sold in the UK and EU all comply with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2016\/507\/contents\/made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TRPR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/tobacco\/product-regulation\/implementing-tobacco-products-directive-directive-201440eu\/revision-tobacco-products-directive_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TPD<\/a> respectively. This means that they ban any harmful additives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of harmful additives, you might remember the EVALI deaths from 2019-2020. At the time, the CDC, WHO, and the mainstream media attributed vaping as the cause, but it later emerged that the ones who used e-liquid mixed with THC and the highly hazardous vitamin E acetate were responsible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when we say vapour is relatively safe, we mean that it is only safe when users follow the intended use and avoid any hazardous additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Difference Between Smoke and Vapour?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several key differences between smoke and vapour, so let&#8217;s take a look at the main ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harmful Chemicals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first and most important difference is the amount of harmful chemicals. Smoke, as discussed above, contains thousands of harmful chemicals that have a devastating impact on health. The number of chemicals present in vapour is much lower than in smoke, and even the ones that overlap with smoke are present in minuscule quantities, which means they won&#8217;t affect health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to second hand smoke &amp; vapour too. 85% of second-hand smoke is unseen and just as dangerous as inhaling it directly. When someone exhales vapor, only a small portion of its components are present, including nicotine which the body absorbs 94% of before exhaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taste<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While some smokers appreciate the taste of tobacco, and can tell the nuanced differences between each blend, most only smoke because they have an addiction. To them, most tobacco&#8217;s taste the same. With e-liquid there are countless flavour combinations that include fruity, menthol and tobacco. So, not only is vaping healthier, it tastes a lot better too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tobacco has a very specific smell, which non-smokers and even some smokers find disgusting. The smell of vapour, on the other hand, smells like the flavour that&#8217;s in it. While not everyone appreciates the smell of vapour, most will find it more appealing than smoke. Also, the smell of vapour clears quite quickly, whereas smoke lingers and sticks to clothing and fabrics. It&#8217;s always important when vaping around others to be considerate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lingering Residue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever been in the house of a long time smoker, aside from the smell, you&#8217;ll see tell-tale signs of their habit. White surfaces begin to yellow and stain due to the smoke. Vapour doesn&#8217;t do this. Aside from maybe a slight build up of moisture on glass, there&#8217;s no long term damage caused by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Misconceptions About Vapour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Vape Smoke&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Vape Smoke&#8221; is a term that I&#8217;ve seen floating around and is generally used by people that should probably read this article. The term itself is actually an oxymoron because, as you&#8217;re probably aware by this point, vape isn&#8217;t smoke. What people who use &#8220;vape smoke&#8221; actually mean is just vapour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nicotine Is Dangerous <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people who are aware that smoking is hazardous to your health incorrectly assume that it&#8217;s the nicotine in the cigarettes that is bad. Whilst nicotine itself isn&#8217;t completely risk free, it&#8217;s no more dangerous than similar stimulants such as caffeine. While it is incredibly addictive, it&#8217;s not actually that harmful when used in moderation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s the main difference between smoke and vapour.
