USA Mayo Clinic Pioneering Research with E-cigarettes.
The Mayo Clinic, based in the USA is a world-renowned hospital and they have been at the forefront of some exciting new e-cigarette research.
The Mayo Clinic has been looking at the feasibility of using e-cigarettes for their patients undergoing surgery.
Smokers have more complications post operatively than non-smokers, and the Mayo clinic wanted to see if the use of e-cigarettes could help improve outcomes, irrespective of whether the patients gave up smoking altogether or not. The emphasis was on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes, or ENDS as the researchers referred to them.
80 patients took part in the trial, where they were taught how to vape and were allowed to vape whenever they felt like having a cigarette. The results were interesting to say the least, with cigarette consumption being cut in half, over 40 of the patients continued to use e-cigarettes, with 17 patients giving up smoking all together.
There was also a reduction in postoperative complications.
The Mayo clinic stated, “ENDS use is feasible in adult smokers scheduled for elective surgery and is associated with a reduction in perioperative cigarette consumption. These results support further exploration of ENDS as a means to help surgical patients reduce or eliminate their cigarette consumption around the time of surgery.”
