Concerns raised over pro-smoking phone apps

A study has found there to be over 100 pro smoking phone apps available to download from Google and Apple.  Tobacco companies have denied any involvement with these, but the Federal Health Department are carrying out a full investigation with the retailers.  Nasser Dhim, a researcher at Sydney University has found the app’s let you pick your favourite brand, light it and then smoke it ‘virtually’.

The apps were found to be available in different categories in the app stores, such as entertainment, games, fitness and health.

It is unclear if the tobacco industry is involved, British American Tobacco would not comment on the research but denied any involvement.  If this is true, then the Tobacco brands that are being used in these apps could potentially issue a legal case against those publishing them.

There is concern that these virtual smoking apps could potentially attract youths or young adults to start smoking.
